Tuesday Morning Golf News
Vintage Monty qualifies for Open Championship - Colin Montgomerie rolled back the years to secure a place in the Open field with a vintage round of golf. The Scot’s focus this year is on his role as Ryder Cup captain, but he has made a concerted effort to spend time on his own game and it paid off in stunning style at Sunningdale. Montgomerie cut a frustrated figure in the morning and a round of 69 left him adrift of the leaders. However, he came out for his afternoon round with a sense of purpose and a birdie blitz brought him a round of 62 and the third of the ten places available for the Open at St Andrews. [Espn]
Rose, Fowler miss out in US qualifier – Justin Rose has missed out on a place at the US Open after falling short in Monday’s 36-hole qualifier in Columbus, Ohio – but he was in good company. Also out is 21-year-old Rickie Fowler, the rising US star he beat in the Memorial on Sunday after Fowler had sat on top of the leaderboard at Muirfield Village for 48 consecutive holes. “Being in contention definitely wears you out quite a bit,” said Fowler, almost certainly speaking for both himself and Rose. “This is my third week in a row playing so I’m looking forward to some time off. “It would have been nice to be playing in the Open, though, but it happens.” Rose, looking to build on his Memorial Tournament victory, could only finish in a tie for 31st on four under par as 120 players battled over two courses for 15 spots at Pebble Beach next week. Love punched his ticket in a six-player playoff for the last five spots and will return to the Open after seeing his streak of 18 consecutive starts in the event end last year. [TheAustralian]
Lowry equals Faldo record in qualifying - Ireland’s Shane Lowry equalled one of Sir Nick Faldo’s records with an eight-under-par 62 at Sunningdale’s old course in the first round of qualifying for the Open Championship on Monday. Lowry, who won last year’s Irish Open as an amateur, carded six successive birdies from the 10th hole onwards to match Faldo’s round during the 1986 European Open. The 23-year-old, chasing one of 10 spots on offer at St Andrews, said: “I’ve been struggling on the greens and confidence was a bit low, so I changed my putter this morning. [Supersport]
