Couples – at age 50 shot an opening-round 66. It was the best Masters round of his long career, and it gave him a one-shot lead over Tom Watson, Phil Mickelson and three other players.
Tiger Woods shot a 4-under-par 68 Thursday, his best score ever on the first day of the Masters despite a five-month layoff. Despite his off-the-course troubles, he heard nothing but cheers from the Augusta National fans.
South African Ernie Els was going along nicely at 3-under until he double bogied the 18th to finish at 1-under. The top two South Africans are Trevor Immelman and Charl Schwartzel 3 off the lead at 3-under tied 12th.

It’s a tough call but I reckon Phil Mickelson has a great chance of winning with his solid putting! I would love to see Ernie win his first US Masters though, Come on Ernest you good thing!
